Exploring Eliphante

Eliphante is a sculptural home in Cornville, Ariz., created over 28 years by artist Michael Kahn and his wife, Leda Livant, out of found materials. The elephant-like entrance to one of the structures gave the building and the compound their name.

Metalworking Book: Call for Artists

From our friend Ben, way out west:

My name is Mathew Clarke Artist/blacksmith and Author of a new book to be titled ART METAL and to be published by Schiffer Publishing; the purpose for this letter is to announce that I am now gathering materials for this book and I’m asking interested artists for their submissions.

This Book will be a showcase of Sculptural art by today’s artists, blacksmiths and metal smiths. Pieces can be small to monumental using a variety of metals with the emphases on formed and forged techniques. They must be current (within the past few years) and sculptural. Along with the photos of finished pieces, I would like to include, however, not essential;

*Working shots of the sculpture in progress,
*The artist working on the project.
*Drawings or maquettes.
*The thought process as to how the idea evolved.
*Comments about the art work and the processes involved in its creation.

The emphasis on this book will be on the contemporary art of today’s artist-blacksmiths and metal smiths, whether using traditional techniques or modern methods to create unique works of art.

DEADLINE: JANUARY 31, 2008 (let me know if more time is needed)

Call for Artist Slide Presentations - Visual Literacy at Providence Public Library

PPL's visual literacy slideshow series will provide a forum for exhibiting and non-exhibiting artists to present their work to the larger community in a public setting. Applicants do not necessarily need to be associated with a gallery or institution to qualify for inclusion. They are seeking a diverse selection of work, and are interested in including designers and artisans in addition to people working in more traditional fine arts media.
To apply to participate in this series, artists should mail or email a short bio, a brief description of their work, and a short qualification of their interest in participating. The cut-off date is January 31, 2008. Artists should also point to a web page of their work, or send images on a CD to: Lanham Bundy Providence Public Library Washington Park Branch 150 Empire Street, Providence, RI 02903 or email to lbundy@provlib.org.

The Steel Yard’s Olneyville Trash Cans find a Home

The Steel Yard announced today that artist Lu Heintz’s sculptural trash cans will be installed in Olneyville, the neighborhood for which they were initially intended.

The industrial arts-focused non-profit spent many months negotiating a new location for the cans after the original clients were unwilling to accept the cans due to differences between the design concept they approved and the final product. Public input helped the Steel Yard create a short list of possible locations that were considered based on criteria including public accessibility and the potential for stewardship.

Drake Patten, the Steel Yard’s Executive Director said, “This has been a long and often difficult process but we are extremely grateful for the support we have received from many Olneyville residents and business owners, the city’s department of Arts, Culture and Tourism and the Olneyville Housing Corporation and as we negotiated a final location for Ms. Heintz’s cans.” She also acknowledged the hard work and many hours that her staff, board and many Steel Yard artists dedicated to this process.

The cans will be installed on Aleppo Street, a road that runs between Riverside Park, a reclaimed brownfield, and Riverside Townhomes affordable housing for Olneyville residents. “We feel that this location provides context to Ms. Heintz’s ‘people’s history’ as well as answers her question: ’Who will right this wrong?’. It is our strong belief that in the face of multiple social and economic inequities, citizen-supported public/private partnerships can change the future of a neighborhood. We hope that by locating the cans in a place where this model is truly exemplified, Ms. Heintz’s art will serve as a constructive critique of Olneyville’s past and present as well as a hopeful nod to its future.”
