belly dancing

Hey Y'all,

This is somewhat unrelated but I told a friend from my yoga teacher training that i'd pass the word along. Besides, if we ever do manage to tape a big bollywood dance number this summer I feel like we could pick up some sweet moves..

American Belly Dance has found a new home at The Motion Center on South Main St in Providence. This is a gorgeous space with views of the river at the bottom of College Hill. (www.motioncenter.com).

American Belly Dance is a unique form that has its roots in classical Middle Eastern dance. In the journey west, it has blended many movements from our culture and is still developing as a truly modern dance. This class presents basic elements to create short combinations. Undulations, shimmies, isolations, and traveling steps are covered, along with how to seamlessly transition between them. All ages, body types and levels of experience are welcome.

Tuesday nights starting March 6th 5:30-7 : Shimmy Madness is a come one come all free flow dance party. This one hour aerobic workout uses basic belly dance movements and introduces all of the shimmies.

Every 2nd and 4th Friday starting March 9th 7-8 drop in or discount with registration

Well Done Howard!!!

Our beloved Mr. Sneider will be receiving the "Individual achievement in visual arts award" at this year's Arts and Business Council's Encore Awards.

They will be honored March 1 at The Plant, 60 Valley St., Providence (¡Yea Puente!), where cocktails will be followed by the 6:30 p.m. “awards and entertainment celebration.” A 7:15 networking reception will feature foods by some of the state’s top chefs. It will give way to an “after party” with electronic and atmospheric dance music. The evening will include performances by Festival Ballet Providence, Opera Providence and others.

More on Food

For the people who followed the back and forth between Micheal Pollan and Whole Food CEO John Mackey after the release of Pollan's book, "The Omnivore's Dilema", you might want to mark your calendars . . .

On February 27th at 7 pm California-time (which is late, I know), UC Berkley is hosting the two speakers for an event entitled "The Past, The Present, The Future of Food". It will be webcast live at http://webcast.berkeley.edu/events.php.

For more on the verbal and written exchange between the two, you can visit Micheal Pollan's website, where he has posted his letters to Mackey: www.michaelpollan.com. John Mackey's letters to Pollan are on his blog: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/blogs/jm/.

Its a very interesting and respectful exchange between two intelligent and passionate people. In my humble opinion there is not enough of this kind of challenging debate going on in the world. And how else will we create real change?

speaking of sunflowers

i am trying to collect some of the slammin pictures of sunflowers at the steelyard that i have seen. may fire up the 'sunflower city' program again this summer, trying to get my materials together.

if you have a pile (as i know my brutha dave's both do) i dont need them all, but would really really like your favorite half-dozen or ten. more is cool too. anything obviously urban or yardie, with sunflowers, and with as much resolution as you got.

i will eagerly repay your awsomeness by giving you art-type objects or super-sweet screen-prints in return.

anyone that has any please please please email them to me at davecole(((((@))))))openarts......org

(extra stuff added to fool the spam bots)

or burn a cd or dvd and leave it in the office on top of the mailboxes

Check this out Concrete...

Trashless for a Year

http://nomoregarbage.wordpress.com/

This blog documents the day to day for a young couple in Toronto attempting what many might say is impossible- living with zero waste, no trash for a month in 2007. This means trying to find stickerless produce, learning how to make thier own crackers, and being very difficult house guests. So far they;ve had to start over several times- once they forgot to tell a waitress not to put a straw in thier waterglass. Good luck Kyle and Sarah!
